If the idea of skydiving is sorely tempting but you’re just not keen about the bit where you have to jump out of a plane, here’s a much more convenient and affordable way to get that adrenaline rush.
Indoor skydiving gives you the experience of flying, freedom and weightlessness in a safe, warm and fun environment without any of the downsides.
Not convinced? Here are 5 great reasons why indoor skydiving should be on your bucket list.
Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to be able to fly like a bird? Whether it was a childhood dream that’s stayed with you or just something you’ve always wanted to try, with indoor skydiving you get the opportunity to experience full body flight.
The technology behind it is a vertical wind tunnel, which is essentially a large tube of fast moving air that pushes air from the bottom to the top. It simulates the air speed and direction that a skydiver would be faced with when jumping out of a plane. The airflow will support your body, which is what gives you the sensation that you are flying. Move your arms and legs to control your body in flight and make like a bird or a superhero!
Most indoor skydiving experiences last for a total of around 1 hour, which can include up to 10 minutes of actual flight time. You can invite your friends and family to come and watch or even join you in the flight chamber.
Unlike regular skydiving where there is an 18-year age lower age limit, indoor skydiving is for everyone. This family friendly activity is huge fun for kids and adults alike. Rules and regulations vary between operators but some will even allow toddlers and pre-schoolers to take part. Why not enjoy the experience together as a family as a special occasion?
Whether you treat your indoor skydiving experience as a one-off event, or it’s the beginning of an exciting new hobby for you, a trip to the wind tunnel is a fun activity that allows you to learn a new and fascinating new skill. No experience is required and there’ll be qualified instructors on hand to teach you about safety, body positioning, and how to communicate in the wind using hand signals. There’s no jumping and no falling, just you floating on a cushion of air.
If you fall in love with indoor skydiving, and many do, you can learn how to perform manoeuvres in mid-air, fly with others in 4-way formation skydiving or freeflying. As a sport, indoor skydiving is called ‘bodyflight’. Practiced as an individual or team sport, it’s one of the fastest growing sports as well as the safest extreme sport out there. Visit the International Bodyflight Association (IBA) for information on how to become a professional bodyflight athlete.
Like any sport or physical activity, indoor skydiving can give you a good body workout. On your first flight, you’ll be focused on a relaxed body position to provide balance, but even that will work your upper body, shoulder, arms and core muscle group. As you get better, you’ll learn to fly in different body positions, working your body harder.
Did you know that 30 minutes of flying can burn as much as 300 calories? Many wind tunnel instructors insist that they have no need for the gym since indoor skydiving gives them all the workout they need to stay in shape.
Such is the rise in popularity of indoor skydiving that this adrenaline-fuelled activity is now routinely suggested by event planners for teambuilding events, off-site meetings, corporate hospitality parties and other business events.
It’s also a memorable way to celebrate a special occasion (birthday, hen weekend, anniversary) or even go on a first date. No awkward silences, no boring dinners, why not go on an exciting adventure together and make some memories?
