Tip Tuesday: Demo Tips
The Denver Broncos on having a good plan and the right mindset for a demo jump...
The third edition of this original event happened in Empuriabrava, Spain… Inspired by the Burning Man Festival, which takes place each year at Black Rock, in the Nevada desert, it is the Skydiving version…
Take Rococo sofas, a pyramid covered with neon lights, a camp of caravans, Indians wearing headdresses of feathers falling down on their back, strolling on unicycle, graffiti artists improving every day works of art in our environment, guys dressed in animals or morphsuit circulating on bikes or other moped, 1980’s cars customized (Art Cars) topped with flashing lights, a green golf cart that will take you to a tour of the property not forgetting to pass under the fountain of foam. All under the benevolence of a giant woodman watching you dance to the beat of Techno and other Deep House music.
Are we there? Welcome to Burning Man 2018!
Oh, but wait, we're not at Black Rock City, we're in Empuriabrava and to the giant circus that surrounds us, they added a Beech, a Twin and a flock of talented load organisers. Welcome to the Burning Spring2018! Where you are asked kindly to leave your ego at the door and enjoy the experience, from sunrise until the middle of the night. We are greeted on opening day by the Babylon Team, with goodie bags, and with the presentation of the staff and the load organisers, with coaches on the rise, such as Jeremy and Pierre. And there are also “newbies” in coaching, such as Will Penny, Domi Kiger, Olav Zipser, Philippe Vallaud, Ippo Fabbi and of course our favorite Babylon crew who took advantage of this event to celebrate 20 years of the formation of their group. Cathy Bouette, Stephane Fardel, Mickey Lamy, Noë Pottier, and of course Mr Aldos Comas, without whom this event would not have the same flavor.
“The Wingsuit is not forgotten: Marine and Vincent “Le Blond” Descols are there, they introduce the participants to the Wingsuit flights, when they are not organising their very special jump with Steff, Cathy, Aldo, Philippe or Domi. Vincent hook the flyer to a climbing rope, swinging them and centrifuge them with amazing barrel roll. This boogie is organized in the idea of sharing good times with friends, fun jumping is the key word creating big smiles and other high five flying in all directions. Every day a new theme is proposed, morph suits jumps, jumps in animals costumes, big ways track with smoke at the sunset, foam swooping and tube jumps of all sort, sizes and colours. Happiness and joy for all.
When it gets dark, the parachutes are packed and the Cypres are falling asleep in the hangar, another boogie starts. Armed with our cups at the effigy of the event, the beer is flowing, good Spanish dishes are served under the large tent, where the participants share their dinner and discuss the jumps of the day, until the bass beat and Aldo’s voice invite us to come watch the video of the day, on a giant screen in the middle of the Burning Village. Once video finished, the DJ takes over and the evening begins until quite late! And that's how it is every day, with a theme of different music and works of art that are beautify progressing during the course of the week all around the site.
For the closing of the event, the evening takes on another dimension. This is the big moment where “the wooden man” is burned. We all gather around this giant of wood that looked at us all week. And there, the show can begin. Dancers, troubadours, percussionists, spewing fire and other pyrotechnical artists invade the camp and offer us a show worthy of a Las Vegas show closing. An artistic shambles of fireworks and other smoke is being established, to the sound of percussion and under the astonished gaze of the Burners.
Some do not hesitate to join the artists in a frenzied dance, while “the wooden man” becomes “man of ashes” and music from the DJ starts to make us turn our head in a nice temporary insanity. The evening party will end up at the Sunrise. The party ended, the participants will go to bed with their heads full of images and the satisfaction of having spent a crazy week. The Babylon crew and all the team of coaches have organised us, an event that it will be hard to forget, and hard to recover from! Now we need to wait a year to get again a good dose of sharing, skydive and madness, at the next Burning Spring 2019, that will be held from 01 to 08 June 2019… Stay tuned!
