The route and tips for the Valley are described below…

Never done it before?

You have to take a guide with you for your first flight, introduction by a pro. You need to be at least a group of 2 swoopers to fly the mountain. A minimum of 100 jumps and a valid skydiving licence are required. And you need instruction.

Of course you can’t learn to fly the mountain on the internet, this article is for entertainment purposes only

Amazing boogie with great vibes, good food, fun parties, FS, FF, Angle, Tracking, Wingsuit and…. MOUNTAIN SWOOPING!!!!!!! If you missed this year, you should attend in 2014 for sure _ by Joost Luysterburg

The Valley, Tree Line Route

The tree line can be divided in three segments: the crest till the flat with the showshed, the valley and the landing. Always remember, in any transfer between one point and the next, to relax shoulders, arms and hands, using risers instead of toggles, letting your canopy fly so that you’ll not be too tired when the next segment begins.

Stay High!

In your first flights over the tree-line it’s highly suggested to stay a little higher so you can understand your glide ratio compared to that of the mountain, both in straight flight and during turns. In particular:

Soon after the crest, when you see the snowshed: the mountain becomes flat very quickly and if you’re too low you run the risk to not pass the trees at the beginning of the channel.

At the end of the tree channel, when the channel finishes, the channel get flats again, so follow your guide, and turn left.

When you’re out of the channel, before arriving the landing area, quit playing with the mountain and start thinking you’re doing a landing outside of an airport. Take care of the brick wall at the end of the descent because it is 2 meters high.

Section 1

The first segment of the tree line starts at the very top of the mountain. The run follows the crest of the mountain towards the snow glades, making a 90 degree right-hand turn. According to experience level and wind conditions, the track can start either at the very top or a little lower. This portion of the dive can be flown by different routes:

Option 1

Fly keeping the crest always on your right hand side until the crest ends, relaxing over the snow shaded flat;

Option 2

Fly keeping the crest always on your left hand until you arrive almost at the snow glades, but never lower than them to be sure to fly out of the flat area.

Option 3

Cutting the crest with s-turns always keeping a safe distance from it. You will fly in a slight zig zag pattern tracing the profile of the mountain and a more vertical descent during the second part of the crest, which will be in front of you upon turning right. If there are any doubts regarding the angle of descent, it is possible to veer right and continue on to the second part of the prior flight route.

If you encounter turbulence, it is advisable to get more space between you and the mountain. In any case, follow your guide and try to be above him in any circumstances.

When you arrive over the snow barrier, you can fly over it only if you arrive keeping the crest on your left side. In all other circumstances, when you’re out of the crest let the canopy fly, get some space from the ground and relax your shoulders, arms and hands to prepare to face the next segments of the run, which is the most difficult one. Use this time to watch the airspace and where the other canopies in your group are.

Section 2

The second section is the tree canal. For the whole flight, it is recommended to keep above the trees and avoid trying to enter the canal. It will take a few flights before properly identifying the glide ratio of your canopy with the different wind conditions. In addition, it is equally important to memorise the position of the trees which form a sort of entrance gates to the canal.

Just as for the Formula One drivers, one cannot speed through a racecourse before knowing all of its characteristics. At the end of the avalanche barriers plane, by staying on the left hand side, it is possible to turn by pulling the back riser or the harness (depending on the altitude one is at) and hence enter the first entry “gate” formed by a number of lower trees.

Once entered, the most flown path will take you to the left towards higher trees, where you can stay just above the trees (that is, if you have sufficient altitude). Shortly after you will see a small track perpendicular to our WAY. By staying on the left hand side it is possible to make an s-turn (always using harness or back riser) which will take you inside the canal. From here on a continuous of left and right s-turns will keep you inside the canal through the ‘gates’ of trees. As mentioned above, do not fly below the tree level during your initial flights. It is important to remember during the flight and these S turns that the canopy is bigger than our body and that we absolutely do not want to touch any branches or trees with the sides of our wing or its lines. This could cause a serious injury.

At the end of the canal you can see the tree-line level itself. At this point, by following your guide, it is mandatory to exit the canal, quit playing with the mountain, let your canopy fly and get some altitude, otherwise you will not be able to fly over the tree plane. Normally the exit from the canal is on the left because once you are outside, you will need to make two 90 degrees right turn to land (a regular U landing pattern). In this part of your flight you will have the temptation to play with the trees but please don’t or else you will arrive short on the landing zone or you’ll not arrive at all (and land on the trees). Let the canopy fly, and relax your arms, shoulders and hands and prepare for the landing.

Section 3

The third section is the landing. Once you exit from the canal, keep the left side, let your canopy fly and prepare for a landing outside the airport. Almost on the top of the village make a light 90 degree right turn to land in the designated landing area. No turns over 90 degrees are allowed because there’s no altitude to make it. Landing from the tree line is always south, keeping the mountain to your right and the street to your left!

In the first area of the landing you can see another green field: never land there. It’s full of bumps, stones and a brick wall 2 meters high (not visible from the top). Quit playing with the trees and the mountain as soon as you exit the canal in order to allow to you to avoid this field and to safely get into the correct landing area.

As soon as you land, turn and watch for the other canopies landing. The field is pretty small, so try to not get hit by those that follow you.

Immediately report any kind of problem you have or anything you see (i.e. someone missing or someone landing in the mountain) to your guide. He or she should have landed before you.

YOU Gravity

The Mountain Gravity Website has a section where you can upload a video of your own flight down one of these routes – and vote for the best.
