The latest D4W.net Dynamic Tunnel competition, for the first time featuring both 4-way, and 2-way!

Charlewars, so named after its host tunnel location in Charleroi, Belgium, literally straight across from the arrivals hall exit at Charleroi airport. A super convenient location for one of the newest and most technologically advanced ISG tunnels to ever ‘blow’ anyone!

Airspace

The tunnel itself? Airspace is the name, made a reality by Steve and Megali Braff, this has been their 8 year dream which was realised just a few short weeks before the competition, a kind of self-induced baptism of fire! But what a first impression it was!

The Workshop

Following on from its previous incarnations over the last few years, there was again a workshop the week prior, which saw every competitor invited along with the judges and organisers. The aim to continue to push the event to be the best it possibly can be. While this is not necessarily the best thing for the competitors, as it might mean any training that teams do prior to the competition could end up being in the old rules, it is seen as the best way for the sport to grow. In a way, all the competitors are putting the sport’s glory ahead of their own, but this of course, will come back in the form of metaphorical pots of gold for all of us!

Going into the competition the top four teams from the 4-way of the previous D4W competition were not present, this meant that the competition was wide open. The previous champions from the Knights of Prague and the Voss Valhalla, Antigravity XP, had to cancel last minute, which meant that the massive trophy made in the shape of a propeller was going home with someone else! Although, with Ryanair’s baggage policy, it was probably not going anywhere!

4WD Qualifying Rounds

The Skywalkers were looking every bit the would-be champions, both on paper and in the practice days leading up to the competition. With D4W founders Alex Aimard and Håvard Flaat, new kid on the block Dave Reader and Renegade Kristian Moxnes, matching suits and some really impressive new style moves from the brain of Reader, stood them apart in the days leading up to the competition. But in the winners’ head-to-head battle at the end of the first day of pool qualifications, it was Czech Team Hurricane Factory who took top honors with the Skywalkers settling for second place overall in qualification, after a few small mistakes cost them the number one spot. As top qualifiers, Hurricane Factory would skip the first round and advance straight into round 2 for the next day, which proved to be a serious advantage.

2WD

The 2-way was also wide open as it was the first time we had seen the class introduced. The first thing to note was the number of teams entering in the 2-way, almost double that of the 4-way; presumably due to the much simpler logistics of two people versus four. This class was up in the air for most people as to who would take the trophy. Team iFly Dynamic, made up of experienced dynamic flyer Scott ‘Plammer’ Palmer and new boy ‘Wonder Bru’ Paul Ferryman, were looking very slick with that fast and intricate signature Plammer style. Another team that stood out were Flystation from St Petersburg, Russia, with another very unique style of slower speed, yet very precise balancing and spinning moves. After the first day of qualification it was iFly Dynamic taking the top spot.

The Competition

Into Saturday, things really started to heat up. The live stream, which had a surprisingly good turnout the day before for qualification, was ready to explode with people tuning in for the finals. The action did not disappoint, with most teams flying at their absolute best and literally scoring personal records.

Padawan

One of the stand out moments was Team Padawan from the 2-way, made up of couple Eliza Alexandra and Auré Lien, going into one of their last battles they saw the team before them make a near flawless routine. This was completely opposite to the round before, where the team they battled against forfeited the round due to too many mistakes to get scored, so they could basically walk the round and take the battle. But this time it was reversed, they had all the pressure of knowing they had to fly at their absolute best. They took the pressure and used it in the most positive way and flew the best routine we saw of them the whole competition. The crowd was in awe of what they had just witnessed; it was obvious we had just seen some of the best flying this couple had ever done!

4WD Finals

Into the finals of the 4-way it wasn’t the Skywalkers battling for that massive propeller trophy. Instead, it was team Chubafly, composed of members of different teams from the last competition and flying a very fast-paced routine. They were up against the very consistent Hurricane Factory who managed to fly under the radar all the way through to the gold final! Chubafly had a different strategy: high risk and high reward. So far it was paying off, setting up for a final of high risk versus consistency

There was one point in Chubafly’s routine, where they had a small collision in every round. It was at a particular point where everyone weaved through each other after a flat out-face shuffler kind of move. Gizmo, the smallest member of Chubafly (in stature only) had a very small window to pass through and only in the final round did he make it through clean! He was so excited to make the pass where on every other round we saw him collide with fellow teammates, that when he finally cleared it we all saw a lightning fast fist-pump mid-routine! Clearly pretty excited to have made it and flown their best routine of the competition – which would earn them the title of Charlewars D4W Champions!!

Chubafly’s free round – Charlewars 2014 final

4WD Results

Chubafly

Hurricane Factory

Skywalkers

AfricanAmericans

Sirius Fly

Joyriders

Just Do It

2WD Finals

In the 2-way it was a similar story with the top teams flying at their absolute best. iFly Dynamic took the gold in a very convincing style showing some lightning fast and highly technical flying.
