{"id":17750,"date":"2017-07-18T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-07-18T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/skydivemag.com\/new\/?p=17750"},"modified":"2017-07-18T23:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-07-18T23:00:00","slug":"2017-07-19-building-confidence-through-other-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/2017-07-19-building-confidence-through-other-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Building Confidence through Other People&#8217;s Mistakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>\u201cYou\u2019re not building my confidence\u2026.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jeannie Bartholomew about to chop her Peregrine 64\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/\/7939e29e-ee79-4922-b4ed-e6006b8d353a.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p>I saw a Facebook comment where a potential new jumper wrote that being at the DZ during several recent malfunctions and cutaways was making him worry about the safety of the sport. &#8220;You&#8217;re not building my confidence&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Being present when other jumpers survive malfunctions can be a great learning experience and can help build your confidence.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from other jumpers\u2019 malfunctions?<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>We can learn that the equipment and procedures WORK!<\/strong> If you are talking to the jumper\u2026 they survived!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>We can learn what went wrong and think about how to prevent that.<\/strong> After a friend packed himself a pilot-chute-in-tow, I learned to stow my bridle much more carefully.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>We can learn how their emergency procedures worked.<\/strong> Did their EPs work as expected, or did the jumper have to do more? When a CRW jumper had a very complex problem and used a VERY unconventional solution\u2026 I filed that for potential future use.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>We can learn from their attitude about the malfunction<\/strong>: <em>\u201cIt was just a spinner.
