It took a while for me to understand it and even longer before I could shrink my over-inflated ego, suck it up and start to apply it.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>To this day, I still don\u2019t always get it right but trying to apply it makes a large step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>The Knowledge Protocol<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>The Knowledge Protocol is: <strong>It\u2019s not about how much you know. It\u2019s about how much you don\u2019t know.<\/strong> When you approach something, even if you\u2019re really good at it, start considering how much you <em>don\u2019t know<\/em> about it. Much better than risking over-confidence by knowing how much of an expert you are \u2013 even if you are an expert. It\u2019s a mindset shift.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>For Experts<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to read the Knowledge Protocol. It\u2019s a little harder to completely understand it. The application takes another step. You need to start by realising that you\u2019re not as much of an expert as you really think you are. For some, this is easier said than done \u2013 that includes me.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You\u2019re not as much of an expert as you really think you are<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Ego<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve competed at over a dozen World Cups and World Championships, I\u2019ve been on the podium at National Championships more times than I can honestly remember. In certain circles and on certain topics, it would be easy for me think that I\u2019m an expert, that there\u2019s little to learn from others, or that what I don\u2019t know is not worth knowing.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>We all like to think we\u2019re good at something. It strokes our ego. We all have an ego whether we choose to admit it or not. Some are much, much larger than others, but we all have them. What I\u2019m asking you to do is turn the other cheek to that ego and step forward. I\u2019m not saying forget it all together \u2013 having the confidence that goes with that ego can be healthy. <em><strong>But, start questioning&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Smudge above the Eiger\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/\/4d903924-d105-4498-9e4f-ce270acfbc95.jpg\"><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Application<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t approach your next skydive, your next house purchase or your next car journey with the attitude that you know all about it. Start approaching it by questioning <em><strong>how much you don\u2019t know.<\/strong><\/em> ****You\u2019ll probably surprise yourself. There\u2019s so much information out there.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ask someone with less experience for their advice<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Ask others<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to do this on your own. If you\u2019re strong enough \u2013 and this is more difficult than it sounds! \u2013 throw your pride out the window. Ask someone with less experience for their advice. If you\u2019re an instructor, ask one of your students. Their point of view will be totally different to yours and they\u2019re likely to be considering different factors \u2013 things that you might need to be considering too.<\/p>\n<h2>Complexity<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>By doing this you\u2019ll automatically be adding complexity into your simpler routine. Be aware of this and don\u2019t over-complicate everything. Complexity can be a good thing \u2013 I\u2019ve written about using <a href=\"\/article\/20131031-keep-it-simply-sophisticated\">complexity<\/a> before. It will stop you glossing over the landscape and keep you attuned to that vital detail that you might otherwise have missed.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>Challenge yourself<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Take the challenge\u2026 Put that ego on hold, throw pride out the window. Apply the Knowledge Protocol:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It\u2019s not how much you know. It\u2019s how much you don\u2019t know.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<h2>For example, do you know?&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The colour of your reserve pilot chute?<\/li>\n<li>The wind speed on a given day when jumping?<\/li>\n<li>Your wing loading?<\/li>\n<li>The best direction to land on a slope?<\/li>\n<li>How to barrel roll in your wingsuit?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Alastair above the Eiger\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/\/ecd4b8cc-9a96-4159-ba62-bf78c800397b.jpg\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s how MUCH you DON&#8217;T KNOW The Knowledge Protocol is my philosophy, my theory and my approach to life.
