If you\u2019re in the early stages of your skydive career (say less than 100 jumps) and you are super focused on BASE jumping, my first advice would be to take it easy \u2013 you have your entire life to kill yourself BASE jumping so don\u2019t be in a hurry. But that often falls on deaf ears, so if your eyes glazed over just now and you started skimming, here\u2019s what you should know\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>You have your entire life to kill yourself BASE jumping so don\u2019t be in a hurry<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Becoming familiar with your BASE gear is a big step in your BASE progression, the importance of which is commonly underestimated by new BASE jumpers. If you are the type of person who can\u2019t handle owning a gun because the temptation to point it at yourself is too great, then you\u2019re probably not the type of person who should own BASE gear before you get some training. But generally speaking, it\u2019s a good idea to get your gear ahead of your BASE course and learn how to assemble, pack, and configure it for different applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because most BASE courses take place only in the BASE environment, and because many BASE jumpers don\u2019t skydive their BASE canopies, there is a minor epidemic of bad canopy piloting in the BASE world. Believe it or not, some BASE instructors are below-average canopy pilots. There are even quite a few jumpers who are competent canopy pilots in the skydive environment, who perform poorly in BASE because they are not familiar with the full control range of their BASE canopy. You cannot learn as much about your canopy from a 500\u2019 bridge as you can from a 4,000\u2019 hop-and-pop. Canopy skills can and will save your life and limbs, in BASE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>Canopy skills can and will save your life and limbs, in BASE<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we take into consideration all of the points above, it leads to this conclusion: Get to know your BASE canopy in the skydive environment before you BASE jump it. Pilot \u2013 Joe Nesbitt&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;by James Yaru\ufeff<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to learn when you get it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 7-cell low aspect ratio BASE canopy typically has a control range that is longer, and a stall speed that is slower, than the skydiving main you will begin with. Also, there are many control techniques which you need to learn for BASE jumping that are not commonly practiced in skydiving. While skydiving your BASE canopy, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Become intimately familiar with the stall characteristics of your BASE canopy.<\/li><li>Learn to fly it backwards using risers and brakes.<\/li><li>Learn to make heading corrections with brakes stowed<\/li><li>Learn to land on rear risers, in preparation for a dropped-toggle scenario<\/li><li>Learn to land using front risers for accuracy and flare during your approach<\/li><li>Become comfortable with steep accuracy approaches, using deep brakes<\/li><li>Learn to land accurately and flare from quarter, half, three-quarter brake approaches<\/li><li>Practice rapid heading corrections using brakes<\/li><li>Practice rapid heading corrections using risers, with brakes stowed<\/li><li>Practice recovering from line twists quickly<\/li><li>Learn to land accurately \u2013 and I don\u2019t mean \u201cin the LZ\u201d. If you choose a lightweight BASE parachute, then you will have a better chance of it fitting into the container you\u2019re using already (a lightweight 250 will fit into many main compartments designed for a 9-cell ZP design). If it doesn\u2019t fit into your own container, negotiate a good container rental rate from your local shop or rigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rigging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get assistance with rigging your BASE canopy to your skydive container system. It\u2019s not complicated, but you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Use acceptable risers (many 3-ring risers designed for BASE are NOT suitable for use in the skydive environment).<\/li><li>Learn what to do with that slider. (If you\u2019re not careful you can have a dangerously hard opening using a BASE canopy for higher airspeed openings). This could include using a specific high-airspeed slider from the manufacturer of your parachute, and using slider control techniques to stage its descent properly.<\/li><li>Learn how to pack it. You might \u201cfree-pack\u201d it using the tail pocket on the parachute, or you might use the deployment bag that is mated with the container system. You don\u2019t have to do a BASE-specific pack job when you\u2019re jumping it from an aircraft, but this is a great opportunity to start practicing elements of it anyway.<\/li><li>Learn what PC is appropriate. This will depend on your delay, the size of the parachute, and how it\u2019s packed. Keep in mind that your BASE canopy will fly differently depending on whether you are towing a collapsed skydiving PC, a 32-ish inch non-collapsible BASE PC, or a typical 42\u201d+ BASE PC that you\u2019ll use during your first real slider down BASE jumps.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"855\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/landing-base-canopy-by-dennis-sattler-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/landing-base-canopy-by-dennis-sattler-1.jpg 855w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/landing-base-canopy-by-dennis-sattler-1-285x300.jpg 285w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/landing-base-canopy-by-dennis-sattler-1-768x808.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px\" \/><figcaption>Your canopy may have different descent characteristics to others in the pattern <br>Image by Dennis Sattler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get some advice from instructors who are experienced with BASE and Skydiving, so you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Don\u2019t break your neck during a terminal slick opening (stick to hop-and-pops for now).<\/li><li>Don\u2019t do silly things in the traffic pattern (practice your maneuvers in an approved part of the DZ airspace).<\/li><li>Know what to expect from the flare, responsiveness, and glide performance of your canopy.<\/li><li>Remember that landing any canopy in a light and smooth headwind is easy, but BASE is usually not like that.
