<\/li><li>Are you a very experienced tunnel flyer, with comparatively low skydiving experience?<\/li><li>Jumping alongside skydivers with much more experience than you?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Situational factors<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Are you hung over, tired, unfit, or have an injury?<\/li><li>Are you uncurrent?<\/li><li>Are you jumping at a new DZ\/ Event?<\/li><li>Do you have family or a partner with you?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you answered &#8216;YES&#8217; to more than half of those questions you are in the DANGER ZONE. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you answered &#8216;YES&#8217; to most of those questions you could easily be in the DEATH ZONE.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked a range of\ninstructors and safety officers worldwide what factors in their experience place\njumpers particularly at risk of having an accident in skydiving.&nbsp; The above list is compiled from their\ncollective experience in the sport, and these factors were repeated many times\nby different coaches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>PERSONAL FACTORS<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s have a closer\nlook at each of those factors, which are interrelated\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1, Jump Numbers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shannon Har-Noy Pilcher commented, <em>\u201cWithin the original PD Factory Team, we came to a collective feeling that between 600-1,000 jumps is the Danger Zone\u2026 As we\u2019ve travelled around the world and become teachers in the sport, we\u2019ve seen that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why does this jump\nrange represent the Danger Zone? Because it can be a stage of overconfidence.\nYou\u2019ve been around the sport long enough to think you know more than you\nactually do. Which brings us to the next factor\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2, Overconfidence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you think you\u2019re a better than average pilot, this may be true \u2013 or you may be overconfident. Unconscious incompetence \u2013&nbsp;you don\u2019t know what you don\u2019t know. Ignorance is bliss.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 2. Conscious incompetence \u2013 &nbsp;you know what you don\u2019t know. \u201cWow, I\u2019ve got still got a lot to learn.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 3. Conscious Competence&nbsp; \u2013 you know what you know\u2026and what you know is not enough for many situations&#8230; so that\u2019s the Danger Zone<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 4. Unconscious Competence \u2013 you don\u2019t know what you know\u2026this is the mastery that Malcom Gladwell says is gained from 10,000hrs of repetition.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI broke my femur when I had 600-700 jumps and I broke my back a year later with probably under a thousand jumps. I wish I had been aware of this phase \u2013&nbsp;conscious competence \u2013&nbsp;of being a bit of a Danger Zone when you start to become overconfident.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:right\"><strong>Shannon Pilcher, Flight-1 and PDFT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3,<\/strong> <strong>Male<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a fact that proportionally far fewer women die than men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/bryan-burke-author.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20405\" width=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/bryan-burke-author.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/bryan-burke-author-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption>Bryan Burke<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cStatistically,\nwomen die in far smaller numbers than their representation in the sport. Women don&#8217;t\nseem to be as obsessed with recognition and peer pressure and are more likely\nto make wise decisions about things like standing down in marginal conditions,\nwing loading, overly ambitious dive plans, and so on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:right\"><strong>Bryan Burke, Skydive Arizona Safety &amp; Training Adviser<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4,\nAre you on the right canopy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you recently downsized or moved to a higher performance canopy? Those people who fly canopies well above\ntheir skill set. I&#8217;ve seen so many people who were not flying the right canopy\nor the right size, who have had accidents that would probably not have happened\nif they had been flying the right wing.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe\nmost distressing thing is that this kind of skydiver will always be active.\nFrom really dumbass people to super-smart highly qualified people: it\u2019s a\ncertain part of their character they all have in common. Lacking to understand\nor believe that they do not have the talent they need to safely fly such a\nparachute in all circumstances. Bryan Burke\nexplains\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI&#8217;ve seen a very high correlation between people who have dangerous jobs, or were very highly successful in business, and serious skydiving miscalculations. In particular, men often believe that a high level of competence in one field &#8211; especially a challenging one &#8211; means they are more competent than most people. Which is like saying that being a good guitar player should automatically make you a great high-performance canopy pilot.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:right\"><strong>Bryan Burke <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6, Lack of training<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pete Allum\u2019s number 1 Red Flag is some-one who has a poor understanding of canopy control \u2013&nbsp;all elements. If you have only taken one or zero canopy skills courses you probably lack understanding of the various ways of flying a parachute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason Moledzki, Flight-1 Instructor had this to say,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/JayMo-WEB.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26259\" width=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/JayMo-WEB.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/JayMo-WEB-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/JayMo-WEB-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption> Jason Moledzki, Flight-1, PDFT <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cMost\ndefinitively the key factor is, the lack of developmental skill acquisition in\nan equal or greater proportion to the rate of increasing risk assumption. Most\ncertainly this is a flawed recipe. Unfortunately, it is not always easy for us\nto recognize this flaw in our perspective, this is the lack of \u2018experience\u2019\nshowing itself. It\u2019s easy to think that\nbeing an amazing tunnel flyer makes you automatically an experienced skydiver\n\u2013&nbsp;but there are countless extra skill sets required. Sometimes people are\nnervous to approach them offering help or advice on safety or canopy matters,\nbecause they are <\/em><em>s<\/em><em>uch good flyers.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"text-align:right\"><strong>Julian Barthel, Flight-1<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8, Part of a group of much more advanced skydivers<\/strong> (with\nsmaller canopies)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cIt\u2019s easy to get sucked into the belief that they can fly small canopies because their peers do. This is especially dangerous if combined with the tunnel flyer mentioned above,\u201d<\/em> commented <strong>Julian Barthel, Flight-1 instructor<\/strong><em>. \u201cPeer pressure can compound this problem for people who are extrinsically motivated, the wish for the respect of others around them pushes them out of their depth to try and prove themselves.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On\nthe other hand, it\u2019s important not to think coaching can substitute for real\nworldexperience. As high-level coaching is more accessible and\naffordable than ever, this can lull jumpers into overestimating their ability.\nSurvival skills are very different to freefall skills but there is a danger of\nassuming they come as a set together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Progressing\ntoo quickly<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Factors 7 and 8 are examples of a risky trend in the sport, which is people \u2018progressing\u2019 too quickly for safety, as Andy Pointer, Skydive Algarve explained,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Andy-Pointer-profile2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26176\" width=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Andy-Pointer-profile2.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Andy-Pointer-profile2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Andy-Pointer-profile2-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption> Andy Pointer, Skydive Algarve Instructor<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe\nsee people go for 1 on 1 coaching for weekends at a time, and then suddenly go\nfrom 2 ways to 10-way group jumps. Body flight ability isn&#8217;t everything and\nawareness is something that is very difficult to improve artificially, even\nwith very high level 1 on 1 coaching. Another perfect example is the\nexpectation that hours in the tunnel should translate directly to group jumping\nexperience.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAnd\nit\u2019s the same process with canopy sizes. I regularly have people with less than\n1,000 jumps ask to jump very small Velos, JVXs, even Valkyries and Leias. And\nthey&#8217;ve always done countless canopy courses and have a couple of references.\nThe problem is that the few jumps that they&#8217;ve got have been hop and pops or\nhigh pulls; dedicated canopy jumps with clear airspace where landing on the PLA\nis all but a certainty. Unfortunately, they don\u2019t always have a huge amount of\nexperience landing off, flying in heavy traffic or recovering from low turns\n(to give some examples), on slower, more forgiving canopies. When these situations\noccur on a fast, cross-braced wing, they&#8217;ve never had to deal with them before,\nand they might not have the skill set to fix it in time.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cCoaching is brilliant. Essential. And progress will always be way faster with a coach than without. But experience is essential too, and can only happen through lots of jumps and lots of years. I do witness people trying to substitute one for the other. I don\u2019t want this to sound discouraging \u2013 people should get all the coaching they can, and move on to fun, challenging jumps when they are ready. Just be wary of straying too far from your comfort zone, and remember that awareness and experience are just as important as physical flying ability. Medium jump numbers over long periods of time (like 1,000 jumps in 20 years). Someone can meet currency requirements of a DZ or a federation, and still have only 300 jumps over 15 years. These guys have never been truly current. Always just about meeting the criteria to be allowed to jump and then taking another lay off. Of course, they are related. All our advisers highlighted overconfidence as a huge risk factor \u2013 which then spills over into other factors such as choosing an overly sporty canopy, and making jumps that are too risky for your experience, condition and\/or prevailing weather. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>ALL our advisers highlighted overconfidence as a huge risk factor<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\ncan we do about it? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may recognise someone at your dropzone who ticks all these boxes. You can try to talk to them, in a non-aggressive manner, about making good choices. For example, starting the post-COVID period gently (when we are all uncurrent), making only small jumps in low stress situations at the beginning, building up gradually, perhaps on a larger canopy at first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/brian-Germain-sqaure.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26281\" width=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/brian-Germain-sqaure.jpg 484w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/brian-Germain-sqaure-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/brian-Germain-sqaure-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Brian Germain said in his excellent aricle, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/2017-12-08-say-something\/\">SAY SOMETHING!<\/a>, If we do not say anything, or we are ineffective due to our failure to communicate, we have a degree of blood on our hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\nmay well have ticked most of the boxes but you still don\u2019t think this article\napplies to you. You\u2019re not at risk, you\u2019re a great canopy pilot!&nbsp; The problem with overconfidence is that it\u2019s\nvery hard to recognise in yourself.&nbsp; It\u2019s\neasier to see from the outside. Most highly experienced skydivers \u2013 legends\n\u2013&nbsp;have looked back at their younger selves and recognise a stage of\noverconfidence.&nbsp; Try to understand the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/the-four-stages-of-competence\/\">four stages of competence<\/a> and identify if\nyou may be in the Danger Zone.&nbsp; If\ndifferent people \u2013 other jumpers, instructors, coaches \u2013&nbsp;are talking to\nyou about your canopy skills\/choices, they probably have a good reason.&nbsp; As hard as it is for you to believe they\ncould be right, if you can suspend your disbelief long enough to listen, this could\njust save your life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you feel some of\nthe DZ rules don\u2019t apply to you?&nbsp; <\/li><li>Or that there is no\nreason you should wait till X number of jumps before wearing that\ncamera\/downsizing\/freeflying? <\/li><li>Do you sometimes miss\na gear check or forget to turn on your AAD? <\/li><li>Do you feel you are\nblamed for the mistakes of others? <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are all symptoms of overconfidence and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/2014-07-31-our-enemy-is-complacency\/\">complacency<\/a>.
