As an industry, we burn a lot of fuel and produce a lot of harmful waste&#8230;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We use petroleum-based, non-renewable resources for our skydiving gear. We ride planes to altitude many times a day to jump out of them for fun. We are not a sustainable industry. <\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>However, we can be <\/strong><em><strong>better<\/strong><\/em><strong> \u2013 less wasteful and reducing our impact on the planet. The concept is simple: treat the world\u2019s resources like our wages. We only make a finite amount of money, so to spend the amount we, as skydivers, willingly pour into the sport, we must make sacrifices in other areas of our lives. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like our wages, we have finite space and resources on our planet.\nSince we spend a large amount of this on skydiving, we need to spend less of it\nin other areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The global lockdown has shown the enormity of human impact on the\nenvironment, with reports all over the world of clearer skies and resurgence of\nwildlife. This break from normal practice provides an opportunity to reassess,\nand to rebuild in a better way if we so choose. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This article gives some figures about our impact on the world\u2019s resources as skydivers. It gives examples of practical actions jumpers, organisations and companies in the sport are taking \u2013 and what you can do \u2013 towards balancing our impact. They are just small steps but as a community, lots of small advances mount up to appreciable positive progress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Our contribution [to the planet], both positively and negatively, whether we realise it or not, is happening. If you can open up to that, that\u2019s step 1. After that it\u2019s about trying to introduce some minor changes \u2013 no matter how minor. After time, that will set a new base line, that we can improve on thereafter\u201d<\/p><p>Simon Guthrie<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Our Impact on the Environment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>100  skydives uses about 140 gallons of fuel <\/li><li>At 3 million jumps per year (USPA statistic), USA uses approximately 4,200,000 gallons of fuel and 44,000 tons of CO2<\/li><li>A Twin Otter burns roughly 30 gallons of jet fuel per load, so 1.5 gallons per jumper<\/li><li>One transatlantic flight is the equivalent of doing 288 skydives. Higher altitude flights (like commercial flights) do greater damage to the   atmosphere due to the proximity<\/li><li>A  skydiver who does 250 jumps and 5 hours tunnel time a year emits 46% more CO2  than the average European citizen<\/li><li>A vegan who does 250 jumps and 5 hours tunnel time a year emits 21% more CO2 than the average European citizen<\/li><li>About  400 skydives is the carbon equivalent of driving across the United States six times (30,000km)<\/li><li>Production and distribution of plastic water bottles accounts for 714 MILLION gallons of oil annually &#8211; imagine each bottle of drinking water being a quarter full of oil<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Did you know?&#8230;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/myskydivingfootprint.org\/\">My Skydiving Footprint<\/a> lets you calculate your skydiving carbon footprint, by jump numbers and plane type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"947\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/bike-double-Wendy-Smith-web-1024x947.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/bike-double-Wendy-Smith-web-1024x947.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/bike-double-Wendy-Smith-web-300x277.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/bike-double-Wendy-Smith-web-768x710.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/bike-double-Wendy-Smith-web.jpg 1970w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>Cycling or ride-sharing \u2013 or both \u2013 lower your impact on the planet compared to cars<br>Photo by Wendy Smith<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Can Jumpers Do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This list is almost limitless\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reduce transport <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are a society of car indulgence; burning fossil fuels, adding CO2 and polluting the air. How often do you see 30 skydivers drive from the same hotel to the drop zone in 20 cars?! Use our close community to find ride-shares, especially at events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bike, walk, or car share to the DZ, work, wherever<\/li><li>Skydive closer to home<\/li><li>Look for hybrid or electric vehicles if changing your wheels<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beer Responsible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pay beer fines with cans\u2026 or even a keg<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cans are made from 70% recycled content<\/li><li>Bottles are only 20-30% recycled content<\/li><li>People recycle cans 20% more often than they recycle glass<\/li><li>Less packaging required, due to less weight<\/li><li>Transportation of cans emits 20% less greenhouse gas than bottles<\/li><li>Bonus \u2013 beer stays fresher in cans because light cannot enter<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recycle <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recycle, and recycle properly &#8211; learn\nabout what can and cannot be recycled in your area and separate items\nappropriately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Veggie options<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoid or reduce meat consumption.&nbsp;\nWhile going vegan or vegetarian is not for everyone, it is relatively easy to\ncut back on meat intake, especially with the wide variety of delicious vegan\nand vegetarian options on the market. If you currently eat meat 3 meals a day,\nand you cut down to 2 a day, that is around a 30% reduction. Every little bit\nhelps!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Livestock are responsible for 15% of the world\u2019s yearly carbon emissions<\/li><li>To produce one pound of beef uses 2,500 gallons of water<\/li><li>Going vegan for a year compensates for the carbon of 176 skydives<\/li><li>Going vegetarian for a year compensates for 138 skydives<\/li><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shop smart!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoid single use items \u2013 plastic\/styrofoam cutlery, cups, water bottles, grocery bags. Use reusable bags &#8211; not just for carrying your groceries out of the store, but also for your produce and other items you would normally put into bags (or even skip the bag altogether! Try to avoid major retailers\nthat sell under-priced, overproduced items.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Shop at thrift stores!&nbsp;<\/li><li>Buy from companies that guarantee their products for life &#8211; for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patagonia.com\/home\/\">Patagonia<\/a> will repair your items at no cost to increase the life of the product<\/li><li>Look for items made from recycled materials &#8211; check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.picture-organic-clothing.com\/en\/\">Picture Clothing<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Donate your old skydiving gear<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Give your old canopies to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.levitynylon.com\/\">Levity Nylon<\/a> (you get a small product\/discount in return)<\/li><li>Skydive gear you replace can be donated to a newer\/poorer jumper or AFF school instead of gathering dust<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What organisations are doing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Denmark, accuracy jumpers are using the e-winch. It lifts jumpers to altitude so they can practice their approach and target accuracy on the tuffet. This could make a significant reduction in aircraft hours for training purposes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>The e-Winch<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"eWinch Used By Top Skydiver for Accuracy Landing Practice\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PZEh__fnz68?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption><em>An alternative to aircraft for accuracy jumpers<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>It&#8217;s a game changer inside the accuracy landing environment&#8221;<\/p><cite>Nikolaj Larsen<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carbon Offset jumps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Sweden, all skydives are subject to a small carbon offset, about 50 cents per jump, the funds are collected by the Swedish Parachute Federation and invested in renewable energy sources such as wind farms. Denmark and the Netherlands skydiving federations have been discussing the implementation of a similar national carbon offsetting standard for each skydive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">APF <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simon Colmer of the APF told us of a few key outcomes the Australian Parachute Federation are achieving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>stopped printing many publications, moved to digital<\/li><li>about to stop printing their monthly magazine, moving to digital<\/li><li>about to stop printing plastic membership cards (currently each member gets 1-6 a year)<\/li><li>moved some meetings to digital instead of face to face requiring air travel (pre- COVID)<\/li><li>digitising forms processing to remove the need for print<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their next steps are to encourage dropzones to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>contribute to recycling all refuse from the bar<\/li><li>ensuring rubber bands make their way to the bin and not into nature<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly they want to investigate further the repurposing of old canopies into habitats for the homeless but this will take time. They had plans to introduce carbon offsetting but the pandemic has slowed down change as times are commercially sensitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ToraTora<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.toratora.eu\/compensation\/\">ToraTora<\/a> have been creative in giving back and have made<a href=\"http:\/\/www.toratora.eu\/compensation\/\"> a number of pledges<\/a>. They ran a raffle where you couldn\u2019t buy tickets but you could <em>earn<\/em> tickets by doing something positive for the planet (eg, going vegan for a month, donating to a cause, joining Sum of Us). At the Adventure Boogie ToraTora donated the raffle proceeds to a local organisation teaching kids the values of mountain sports. They have planted <a href=\"https:\/\/trees.org\/sponsor\/toratora\/\">56,830 trees<\/a> in partnership with Trees for the Future, an initiative also supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.satorifactory.net\/sustainability\">Satori Factory.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We are currently searching for more sustainable ways to practice our sports but we still have a long way to go. Jumps, travel and other emissions are compensated for by the event. Waste reduction, recycling and care for the natural world are front of mind&#8221;<\/p><cite>Tim Douglas<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clean Air<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Satori Factory have embraced the sustainability concept, starting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.satorifactory.net\/clean-air-force\">Clean Air<\/a> project, where you can donate towards positive environmental projects, which are far more than planting trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Most of the CO2 compensation programs, tree planting programs or other ecological actions are ignoring the social and human condition layer. I believe we can&#8217;t solve such problem without integrating the people trying to get out of poverty within the solution. If not, they are going to choose the easiest\/cheapest option, which is generally taking advantage of the natural resource, following the example of the richest countries.<\/p><p>To provide a solution to these people that can take them out of poverty while adopting sustainable practices is the best way to avoid repeating our mistakes and to empower them and their children to create a better future for everyone&#8221;
