Exactly the same concept applies to skydiving. Freefall or canopy flight itself is not going to kill you, but colliding with someone or something else at speed can be fatal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-advanced-heading uagb-block-ae21d0e2\"><h3 class=\"uagb-heading-text\"><strong>Two Safety Principles<\/strong><\/h3><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping yourself safe in skydiving boils down to two principles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep your gear in order&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t hit anything or anyone.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s look at those in more detail\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-3fc0fd2e wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/keep-gear-in-order-1024x628.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-52296\" width=\"1200\" height=\"736\" title=\"keep-gear-in-order\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\" \/><figcaption class=\"uagb-image-caption\">Look after your gear, including regular checks<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-keep-your-gear-in-order\">1. <strong>Keep your gear in order<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our rigs literally keep us alive. We start falling to our death the moment we leave the plane. Equipment failure is rarely to blame. Rather, the majority of incidents are a result of complacency and human error. If you look at Friday Freakout videos, most accidents occur when experienced jumpers push their limits and\/or make poor judgments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skydiving has come so far that we can sometimes forget how dangerous it can be. Could you be bordering on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/the-silent-killer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complacent<\/a>? Safety is more than gear checks, \u2018level-slot-dock\u2019, or flying a predictable pattern. It\u2019s a habit, an approach to skydiving. Safety forms the foundation of this sport. Without it, skydiving literally cannot exist. Manufacturers have spent years doing R&amp;D to make our sport safer but all that doesn\u2019t matter if jumpers neglect their own safety. Safety innovations such as the Skyhook or slider snaps can only help so much &#8211; jumpers must keep themselves alive by their actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you learn to prioritize safety, you\u2019ll likely spend more time in the sport. When you start with safety, you\u2019ll progress more holistically, fly with more precision, and become more knowledgeable. Having confidence in your own safety helps you learn other skills. Eventually, this mindset overflows into other areas of your life &#8211; if you start with what is truly important and needs attention, you prioritize the correct things because the starting point is right.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody skydives with the intention to get injured. But we must bear in mind we never know when the next jump might be our last. We should all strive for longevity.
