That\u2019s your job. Think of your rig like a seasoned skydiving buddy: it won\u2019t complain unless something\u2019s seriously wrong. But if you pay attention, it <em>will<\/em> drop hints when it\u2019s getting tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s how to catch those early signs of fatigue before your gear stages a protest at 3,000 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-harness-amp-container-the-stitches-that-hold-it-all-together\"><strong>Harness &amp; Container: The Stitches That Hold It All Together<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might check the fabric, but what about the stitching? That\u2019s where the magic \u2014 and the danger \u2014 can be hiding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What to spot:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fuzzy or frayed threads, especially around the 3-ring junction, chest strap, main lift web, and leg straps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stitching that looks \u201csunburned\u201d \u2014 UV damage makes threads brittle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Webbing that\u2019s gone soft or wrinkly, like old lasagna noodles \u2014 that\u2019s a red flag<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rigger tip:<\/strong> Run your fingers along the seams. Aging lines and fabric can be subtle saboteurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What to inspect:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fabric with pinholes, weird spots, or fading.&nbsp; UV is sneaky and silent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brake lines and cascades:&nbsp; fraying means friction, and friction means failure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Line trim: uneven lengths = unstable flight. Line checks should be routine, not just part of your reserve repack<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pilot chute and kill line:&nbsp; inspect the stitching on your PC handle, and check your kill line every time you measure line trim<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pro move:<\/strong> If you\u2019re getting line twists or funky openings often, your lines might be out of trim. Have them measured every 100 jumps or whenever your openings start getting \u201cweird.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reserve-amp-aad-not-just-set-it-and-forget-it\"><strong>Reserve &amp; AAD: Not Just Set-It-and-Forget-It<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, your reserve is packed by a rigger: no, that doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re off the hook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Things to check:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reserve closing loop: should not be chewed up or crusty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AAD display: check battery level, service date, and position regularly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AAD status: before every jump day, confirm it\u2019s armed and showing the correct status<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reserve pin &amp; seal: make sure the reserve pin is seated properly and the seal is intact. A crooked pin can indicate excess tension: or worse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reserve pilot chute: make sure it\u2019s seated tightly and not rocking side to side. On some rigs, it\u2019s exposed and easy to inspect. Gear checks? Not as fun but it\u2019s a hell of a lot better to find a gear issue in the hangar than during a cutaway sequence at terminal speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early wear and fatigue don\u2019t mean your gear\u2019s done, they mean it\u2019s <em>talking<\/em>. A little extra attention now keeps you jumping longer, safer, and with way more confidence. If you\u2019re only having a rigger look at your gear every 180 days, you\u2019re gambling with house money&nbsp;and the house always wins. A few minutes of inspection now beats a lifetime of hindsight. <strong>Don\u2019t wait for your gear to scream.
