{"id":61367,"date":"2026-01-11T21:55:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-11T21:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/?p=61367"},"modified":"2026-01-13T20:05:56","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T20:05:56","slug":"performance-skills-for-high-level-flying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/performance-skills-for-high-level-flying\/","title":{"rendered":"Performance Skills for High-Level Flying"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-elite-performance-practices-that-you-can-apply-to-skydiving-base-and-tunnel-flying\">Elite performance practices that you can apply to skydiving, BASE, and tunnel flying<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skydiving, BASE jumping, and tunnel flying haven\u2019t necessarily been culturally recognized as \u201csports\u201d in the same way other mainstream sports have. This makes it a bit easy to forget how truly demanding they are. Our sports are very high-level performance environments. We ask the mind and body to focus and perform while simultaneously managing all sorts of things like nerves, fear, and intense sensory input. All of this in just a few short moments of performance. This puts a heavy load of demands on our ability for attention, decision-making, and emotional regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The good news is this isn\u2019t unique. Elite athletes across many sports are familiar with the same pressures, although maybe not at the edge of a cliff or a world record skydive. Sports psychology has decades of studying and research into what helps people perform well when under intense pressure. The same mental skills used by Olympian athletes, professional athletes, and other high performers are not only applicable to our sports, but they\u2019re something we can learn from.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m sharing three mental performance skills that are consistently found in sports psychology research, recognized by high-level performers across many fields and also things that I\u2019ve found to be helpful along the way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07041-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61370\" style=\"width:860px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07041-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07041-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07041-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07041.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Jesse &#8220;Tex&#8221; Leos <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tip-1-focus-on-what-you-can-control\"><strong>TIP #1: Focus on What You Can Control<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we\u2019re under pressure, the nervous system tries to pay attention to a larger picture all at once. It lands in a heightened state, which is a physiological survival mode, scanning for threats, possibilities, outcomes. This is great for survival, not so great for honing focus for performance. Because of this, our reaction time slows, decision-making can become a bit foggy and less efficient, and errors can slip in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most reliable tools taught in sports psychology is what\u2019s referred to as \u201cattentional control\u201d or focusing on the things that you can control.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than trying to manage the end result, athletes who practice this focus their attention towards a small set of variables that are totally within their control, such as:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Breathing: rhythm, depth, style<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Body: position, posture, awareness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visual: Where you focus, soft gaze, hard gaze<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we hone our attention, control the controllables, and regulate the breath, we can&nbsp; lower our perceived anxiety, and tap into a stronger sense of control under stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Barb_Tex_Briefing-1024x933.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61371\" style=\"width:860px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Barb_Tex_Briefing-1024x933.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Barb_Tex_Briefing-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Barb_Tex_Briefing-768x700.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Barb_Tex_Briefing.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo by Barb Zermano<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tip-2-build-a-routine\"><strong>TIP #2: Build a Routine<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some form of pre-performance routine is almost universal in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportpsychologytoday.com\/sport-psychology-for-coaches\/sports-pre-performance-routines\/#:~:text=A%20pre%2Dperformance%20routine%20is%20a%20sequence%20of,*%20Rugby%20goal%20kicking%20*%20Volleyball%20serving\">professional sports<\/a>. Routines can help performance, but they can also regulate the nervous system.&nbsp; If your routine on a casual, no pressure skydive is the same routine used for a high pressure jump, you\u2019ve built in a consistency that the nervous system is familiar with, essentially tying a sense of calm into the moment of pre performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Routines don\u2019t need to be elaborate. Good ones are simple and easily repeatable. You don\u2019t need anything complex. Something that feels natural to you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For your own routine, consider a common structure for routines in sports:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One breath to down shift the nervous system (examples of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skydivemag.com\/new\/toolkit-breathwork-for-skydiving-base\/\">sports breathwork<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One physical movement, such as rolling the shoulders, shaking out the hands, clapping the hands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One mantra or mental cue (Example cues: calm, smooth, powerful)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With consistency, your routine can become a switch. You\u2019ll train your brain that this routine means it\u2019s time for execution and focus, not fear and overthinking. Learning how to be good at something means you\u2019re able to do something wrong until you learn how to do it well. High performers understand how to quickly move on when they haven\u2019t nailed something.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They acknowledge the mistake, take whatever information is useful, and then refocus back on their practice. The goal is not to suppress emotion or ignore what happened, but to make sure that moment doesn\u2019t overtake the rest of the performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-train-like-you-mean-it\"><strong>Train Like You Mean It<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we want to be good at this, if you truly have goals in the sport, whether that\u2019s to compete, to achieve national or world records, to coach or just be able to join any skydive, it\u2019s going to take some effort.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why not tap into a format full of rich tools proven in sports psychology and used repeatedly by some of the world\u2019s highest performing athletes. Sure, skydiving might not be universally recognized (yet!), but it doesn\u2019t mean we can\u2019t train as if it\u2019s an olympic sport already. And the side benefit to this level of training is how much of this will apply to the rest of your life.
