Jeb named the stunt ‘the Flying Dagger’ and has been building up to this for a year. He was intrigued the first time he saw this marvel of nature “Wow! I didn’t understand how nature could create something like it, with almost perfect 90-degree lines.”

Jeb described the stunt as being ‘the single gnarliest thing I’ve ever done in my life, without a doubt’ – not bad from the man who’s flown through waterfalls, though an arch in the side of China’s Tianmen Mountain and burst the string on balloons 5 feet from the ground. He’s base jumped Eiffel Tower, the Space Needle in Seattle and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro. Even if he has 9 lives, Jeb seems to be going through them at a great rate, injuring himself on many occasions that could have been fatal; breaking his back, his leg, both ankles and more in at least 3 separate incidents.

Through the Crack

Jeb’s latest adventure was at Mount Jianglangshan, in China, where the crew have been anxiously waiting for the squally winds and storms to die down. Just when they thought they would have to abandon the jump the winds gave them a window. Wasting no time, Jeb jumped from a helicopter at 4,000 feet and piloted his wing suit right through the crack. It is roughly 30-feet wide, 900 feet long and 900 feet high. Jeb said “I have never had to fly so precise for such a long distance.” Once entering the crack he was committed, there is insufficient space to open a canopy inside. After the crack was negotiated he had to deploy straight away and land in one of 2 tiny areas.

Augmented Reality

To train for the jump Jeb has been using augmented reality technology, where he actually jumped from an airplane at 12,000 feet and ‘saw’ the canyon, a thousand feet below him. His eyes and brain were fooled by an computer simulation of the exact mountain and crack he was to later jump; precise in every way. This enabled him to do the jump hundreds of times without danger before trying it in reality. Jeb said he crashed and burned on half of the training jumps but it was useful to see what mistakes to avoid.
