Not sure what to expect for your first time skydiving? Here’s how to feel confident, calm, and stoked from takeoff to landing.
So, you’ve decided to jump out of an airplane. Whether it’s been on your bucket list for years or a spontaneous leap into the unknown, your first skydive is something you’ll never forget. But showing up totally unprepared can turn excitement into stress fast.
Here’s what you need to know before your first jump so you can show up with confidence, enjoy the experience, and walk away stoked for more.
1. Choose the Right Dropzone
Start by doing a little homework. Look for a dropzone that is a USPA Group Member (or your country’s national equivalent). This means they follow safety standards, use certified instructors, run courses for becoming qualified skydivers and maintain their gear properly. Check out reviews, photos, and staff bios. A good dropzone will feel professional, welcoming, and transparent about what to expect.
2. Eat (a Little), Sleep (a Lot)
Nerves can mess with your stomach but skipping food altogether isn’t the answer. Have a light meal about 1–2 hours before your jump. Avoid greasy, heavy, or sugary foods. Even more important? Sleep. A good night’s rest will help you stay sharp, calm, and present for every second of the experience.
3. Wear the Right Clothes
Comfort is key. Dress for the weather, but avoid anything bulky, baggy, or restrictive. Athletic wear and sneakers are perfect. Bring layers in case it’s cold or hot. Open-toe shoes or heels are a no-go.
4. Listen to Your Instructor
You don’t need to know everything, but you do need to listen. Your instructor will walk you through the gear, body position, and what to expect during freefall and landing. They’ve done this hundreds, if not thousands, of times. Trust their guidance.
And don’t be afraid to ask questions. Good instructors want you to feel safe and informed.
5. Expect to Wait…Then Go Fast
Skydiving is weather-dependent and logistically complex. You might wait an hour or two before it’s your turn—but when it’s go time, things move quickly. Use the waiting time to take in the environment. Bring snacks in case you experience a wait. Or, ask the dropzone if there’s a cafe on hand.
When it’s time to board the plane, take a deep breath, smile, and lean into the moment. You’re about to do something incredible!
6. Stay Present
It’s easy to let nerves hijack your attention. Try to stay focused through the experience. Look out the window on the ride up. Soak in the altitude. Smile at your instructor. Let it all sink in. This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Be there for it.
7. Buy the Video
A great video is more than a souvenir. It’s a time capsule of who you were when you said yes to the unknown. Future you will thank you for it.
Final Thoughts
Skydiving for the first time is a big deal. It’s not just about jumping from an airplane, it’s about showing up for an experience that pushes past fear, expands your limits, and shows you what you’re capable of. Choose the right place, prepare just enough, and let the rest unfold.
Blue skies, and welcome to the skydiving family.
