Every year this competition is more exciting to watch, as the level of freeflying goes through the roof. Everyone’s always has high anticipation of seeing what new moves have been created since the last World Challenge.

Judging

With judges Adam Mattacola and Håvard Flaat, previous world challenge champions alongside the other judges, the teams knew they had to come up with something to impress and score highly. The judges weren’t to be left disappointed.

First round jitters

The first round is always the most exciting! Teams have no idea how they stand with their creativity and how well they will be scored against the other competitors – as well as fighting against those competition nerves!

Many teams had come up with a new twist on existing moves. It was a powerful start from the Russians and the Prague boys, with the Dubai team scoring high in the first round, which was no surprise. These four teams looked like they were in for a nice battle throughout the competition.

Flying Styles

Team Volosity was also showing some new moves with one performer sitting on the other’s shoulders whilst performing a full layout into an outfacing carve. Maktoum were performing trick after trick with much variety, the Russians were flying super smoothly. Both Hurricane (Czech rep) teams were putting together some nice choreography and battling neck-and-neck with each other.

Well done to the Singapore teams for travelling all the way over to show their style of flying, together with some amazing full face helmets that light up and flash as they fly around! They brought some young children who were battling hard against the adults, performing fast and cleanly.

The Zephyrs were performing super smoothly; they look promising for the near future as they are both very young and have a natural look for flying. The Polish team flew simple and clean, with an explosive entrance that put a smile on the judges’ faces.

Results

Compulsory rounds are always important and most teams neglect them. Maktoum looked like they had put too much training into the free round and not the compulsory, and this hindered them, to finish second behind Hurricane Factory 1. In third position were Hurricane Factory 2 who also had a bad compulsory round, which knocked them off the battling spot for first place.

Yet again it was a fantastic artistic event with all freeflyers battling hard and bringing some new creativity to the sport.
