A Unique Celebration in the Sky

Day of the Dead

Día de muertos’ – or, the day of the dead, is one of the most emblematic holidays in México. It’s a date when we honor our loved ones who have passed away. Celebrated on November 1 and 2, this tradition is an explosion of life and color, where altars are filled with offerings, cempasúchil flowers, sugar skulls and memories that evoke a deep connection with the afterlife.

This year at Skydive Monkey Head, we decided to take the celebration to new heights: a day of skydiving dressed in the magnificent costumes of @monsterhousemx! Imagine the participants dressing up as skeletons, catrinas and other iconic figures of the day, jumping from different aircraft. As they fall, the wind not only caresses their faces, but also seems to be a whisper from the spirits that accompany them!

Upon landing, skydivers celebrated with a party filled with traditional music, typical food such as “pan de muerto”, and even an improvised altar where messages and offerings can be left. This unique event mixed the adrenaline of skydiving with the rich, world-famous Day of the Dead culture, creating a vibrant and meaningful tribute between intrepid athletes and their ancestors.

The experience of costumed skydiving adds a fun twist to this solemn holiday, allowing respect and joy to intertwine in a flight into memory. Each jump becomes a tribute to life and death, reminding us that celebrating our loved ones can be an exciting and unique adventure!

Fancy Dress and Safety

But while fun is key, safety should always be the priority. Not all costumes are suitable for jumping. Skydiving clothing is designed and thought out for the sport, but costumes are not. Many times, putting on something for the first time, something different, generates a bit of nerves and that can distract you from taking care of important details.

Choose a functional costume:

  • It should not obstruct your handles or equipment in general.
  • It should not obstruct movement
  • It should resist the force of the wind
  • It should be tight and not move in free fall
  • It should give you adequate visibility in free fall and landing

Then, practice the jump correctly and agree with the others in the group, and make sure to make a good plan so that there are no risk points.

Remember that wearing a camera as well as a costume is okay when you already have some experience, if not, it is better to hire a cameraflyer to capture those incredible images.
